Letterboxd Reviews: July

My Letterboxd account documents what films I am watching, usually films for the first time but occasionally a film I haven’t logged before. Here’s a summary of the films I have watched this month, including a rating and short review for each.

This July I have watched 21 films:

Here’s what I thought of them:

A Dangerous Method

“A great trio of actors and therefore a very well acted drama. The story is interesting, but unfortunately that doesn’t make it entertaining. Whilst rather dull for the best part, it was still a decent watch.”

Bel Ami

“A decent drama with a well adapted screenplay, having a fairly decent story line due to its original source. Robert Pattinson gives yet another strong performance as a man driven by power and sex, and his female co-stars each play their parts well, too. Unfortunately, for a film about sex, it just wasn’t as sexy as it could have been.”

Martha Marcy May Marlene

“Martha Marcy May Marlene is a truly intriguing and brilliantly directed dramatic thriller for Sean Durkin’s first feature film. Unfortunately it is too subtle in places, relying heavily on story telling whilst not giving a lot away. Elizabeth Olsen is amazing though, and I look forward to seeing more from her as we undoubtedly will. Whilst I really enjoyed the film and thought it was brilliantly made, it felt as if something was very much lacking, for me.”

Bridesmaids

“Very funny, great cast, follows a much better plot than I thought it would, and is overall very enjoyable.”

Magic Mike

“Can’t complain…. and the film? Oh. Yeah it was good too. The story line was okay, better than just background filler, but this is only really good for the dancing scenes. With Tatum having experience as a stripper, it’s worth the watch too! Also really enjoyed McConaughey in this.”

Easy A

“Ahh I love Emma Stone, and am a big fan of Will Gluck’s romantic comedies. Easy A is a brilliant comedy and a nice change to the usual American teen films. A very 21st century story that’s thoroughly entertaining for all. Plus it also has a great soundtrack, and Stanley Tucci is very funny too.”

Law Abiding Citizen

“Thought it would have been a lot better but it wasn’t awful. A good crime thriller with some great gorey scenes. It was very much like a serious Saw film. Ended a little disappointingly but the near final scene still looked pretty cool.”

Taken

“Not quite sure what all the fuss was about, it’s just Liam Neeson kicking the sh*t out of a lot of people. Whilst he’s a great actor and the film was entertaining, I expected a lot more.”

Date Night

“Carell and Fey make a brilliant combination. The film is funny and entertaining in places but it’s nothing new or amazing.”

Some Like It Hot

“A masterpiece in its day. Such a good comedy, and Monroe is stunning – this is definitely one her best films.”

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

“A nice little musical drama with the amazing Monroe.”

The Dark Knight Rises

“I found it a little boring at first, but that’s because it’s 3 bloody hours long. After the first hour and half though, it was epic. Amazing score, Bane was brilliant, and there was so many great surprises! It has its flaws – mainly a lack of an emotional core until the very end – but nonetheless, a fantastic end to the trilogy”

Wanderlust

“Isn’t it funny that when some actors play the same sterotype over and over again it gets tedious, but then with others it’s one of their best qualities? For me, Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston will never get boring. The film was very funny and entertaining, and also including some of the other actors from Role Models (coming from the same director) so it was a great cast to laugh along with.”

Zombieland

“Funny, gorey, great story, but not always entertaining. Some brilliant scenes though and a great debut for the director. Harrelson is fantastic.”

What To Expect When You’re Expecting

“A great adult rom-com about how a variety of couples go through pregnancy. Both romantic and funny as well as dramatic, dealing with many serious issues as well as the fun side of having a child. A great cast, all of whom are coupled up brilliantly to make likeable and relateable relationships.”

Take Shelter

“Yawwwwn. Sorry, what? I lost interest. It was slow and dull. I expected so much more. Enjoyed the last few shots though, but it’s not worth it for that.”

Rebecca

“Not nearly as good as the book, but that’s a given. Too much was missed out and/or changed – there wasn’t enough emphasis on everybody comparing Mrs de Winter to Rebecca to give it enough effect, especially from Maxim. All emotions were far too played down to have the same impact as the novel. Still, a very haunting and well directed film with some great performances.”

The Amazing Spider-Man

“The best Spider-Man yet. The Amazing Spider-Man works at a much better level because it has an emotional depth to it. Because of both Garfield’s acting and Webb’s direction, this time around we actually care about who Peter is and what he becomes. Garfield is brilliant for the role, re-vamping a superhero that isn’t always as well-favoured as the many others. Garfield’s on-screen chemistry with Emma Stone, too, is extremely enjoyable.”

The Notebook

“I didn’t like this film when I first saw, I was one of few girls that didn’t make their boyfriends watch it. And I still probably won’t, but now I personally love it. Such a great story that is really well played out, intertwined between two different time settings. Gosling is powerful and brilliant, and even McAdams can be applauded. Their chemistry is amazing. It really is a heart breaking tale that can be watched over and over. The best Sparks’ adaptation by far.”

Blue Valentine

“Completely depressing but beautiful in every way. Gosling and Williams are brilliant, as always. Their raw emotion is so powerful. Romantic but so anti-romantic at the same time. I love this film.”

The Last Song

“I only wanted a crappy rom-com that would make me cry and that’s what it did. The acting isn’t terrible, although I am not a fan of Miley’s at all, and Liam Hemsworth is much better in The Hunger Games, despite how small his role is there. It has a fairly decent story line, not overly cliché or immature but still, it’s not great. Barely good, but it did the trick.”
